MISSION STATEMENT ACCOMPLISHED

Aw, man! I had a title all picked out - 'SWERV: Scotch Whisky Enthusiasts of Richmond, VA'. The acronym a not-so-subtle acknowledgement of why I drink most of my scotch in the comfort of my living room, as well as the prospect of puns about 'getting my SWERV on'. I tried entering it as my blog title, but turns out it was already taken. My first assumption was someone had beaten me to the punch; there must already be an online community in my area swapping single malt tasting notes and recommending good whisky bars. So I Googled it...boy, was I wrong (NSFW).

On to Plan B. How about 'Sippin' Pretty'? Meh, too dainty. 'If It's Not Scottish, It's Crap'? Kind of long, and probably trademarked, not to mention there are some damn fine whiskys out there made outside Scotland, even here in Virginia. I kept coming back to the common thread among my scotch drinking friends that for each of us, it was a gradually acquired taste. Fully appreciating complexity and nuance requires time and effort, no different from learning to cook or play guitar. The process is the adventure.

I'm still a relative newcomer to appreciating scotch, but I thought maybe I could impart a few nuggets of wisdom to those in my area just getting started. I have young children and live 20 minutes south and three tolls away from downtown RVA, so I'm far more likely to visit the ABC store than the latest hipster bars in Scott's Addition or Church Hill.  I've kept tasting notes on all the single malts I've tried since I made a conscious decision to do so about two years ago (around the time I switched to craft beer too, maybe I'll throw some of that in for kicks).

This is my first attempt at blogging and I'm staring up the steep incline of a daunting learning curve here, so bear with me. Despite what my first choice of blog names would suggest, I have no delusions of organizing some sort of local 'scotch club' [insert obligatory tired Fight Club reference here], but I did want to relate my experiences with fellow Richmonders, or any casual scotch novice for that matter, and welcome their input and feedback.

And away we go...
